Fitness Instructor Grant for Parkinson's
applications are reviewed twice a year - Spring & Fall
Overview
This program is temporarily suspended as resources are being directed to COVID response activities.
Our goal at Parkinson’s Resource of Oregon (PRO) is to reach as many lives touched by Parkinson’s Disease (PD) as possible here in the Pacific Northwest. Research shows strong evidence on the benefits of exercise in managing Parkinson’s disease. Exercise can help improve symptoms such as balance, stiffness, coordination and even mood. Group fitness classes also improve socialization and community in a disease that can be isolating.
At PRO, rural outreach is a strategic initiative from our board and we hope to help support local professionals in their efforts to reach regions that have been under-served or lack appropriate exercise options for those living with Parkinson’s disease. The Fitness Instructor Grant program allows for grant awards up to $1500 to support the creation or extend the reach of fitness classes to the Parkinson’s Community throughout Oregon and SW Washington.
Applications are reviewed by our volunteer Fitness Grant Committee who determine the grant awards.
Applicant Criteria
Applicants for this grant must meet the criteria below
- The funds you are applying for must be used for the creation of a Parkinson’s exercise program. Consideration will also be given for expansion of existing programs where unmet needs can be documented. However, priority will be given to new programs in areas that are under served, or that serve a different segment of the PD community.
- Grant awards will be denied if the funds are being requested for participant scholarships or income supplementation for an existing program.
- Applicant must reside in and proposed program must be located within Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon’s area of service, Oregon and SW Washington. (In WA, eligible counties host a PRO sponsored support group)
- The applicant must have relevant professional credentials and experience to work with the special needs of the Parkinson’s community.
- The applicant must be able to provide a clear description of the need for a class including details on the program, a budget for the first year, and how grant funds will be used.
- A narrative report will be expected within a year of the award along with detailed budget reconciliation.
- Only one grant request per calendar year will be considered.
- If awarded, payment will be made directly to the approved applicant. Payment will be made only after both the signed agreement, W9, and proof of insurance are in place.
Note: In addition to information you provide, PRO and the Fitness Grant Committee will consider outside factors when evaluating your application. This may include other Parkinson’s programs within the community, accessibility to surrounding programs, and how many individuals will be served.
