When Levodopa Is No Longer Consistent: Hybrid

Join us in-person or online for a conversation with Dr. Zoltan Mari, MD. If you live in the Portland metro area, we strongly encourage you to attend in person!

In this talk presented by Supernus Pharmaceuticals, one of PRO’s Annual Sponsors, Dr. Mari, will discuss Parkinson’s and Off periods and the role the medication Apokyn can play in addressing these episodes. Apokyn is different than other Parkinson’s medications in that it bypasses the GI tract. Because it uses a different route of administration, it is readily available in the brain to end off time and let you return to activity.

Dr. Mari is an expert in Parkinson’s Disease. Currently, he is the Ruvo Family Chair and Director for Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorder at the Cleveland Clinic’s Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas NV. Dr. Mari has previously served as full time faculty at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Mari has been a part of dozens of clinical studies.

Mental Health for Caregivers: Hybrid

Join us in-person or online for a conversation with Joan Laguzza, MSW, LCSW. If you live in the Portland metro area, we strongly encourage you to attend in person!

In this talk, Joan will discuss how to take care of your mental health if you are a family caregiver to someone with Parkinson’s. Joan will share information about how to foster awareness of your mental health, how to understand what to do if you think you need help, and when/if to share emotional challenges with the person receiving care.

This talk will last about an hour, with an additional 15 minutes for questions.

Preparing for the Unexpected: Vancouver

Illness, family obligations, and medical needs can all come unexpectedly for any of us, and for those of us in crucial roles as caregivers (for ourselves or others), it is important to plan ahead.

We will assist participants as they identify steps to take to get prepared, including rallying support and identifying roles ahead of time for family and friends, finding care resources, and gathering and organizing crucial information. By taking steps to prepare and communicate with your larger network, we hope to lessen the stress of “what will happen if I can’t be there?” and “What will happen if I need help?”

This event will be in person and a packet of information will be provided at the event.

Newly DX Meet-Up: Beaverton

Whether you are newly diagnosed or new to the Portland metro area, you may be feeling a bit like a fish out of water. Change can be difficult when you don’t have people by your side. The goal of this event is to provide a place and space for people to make connections with others going through similar changes. Keeping it casual, we’ll have some games to play and snacks to enjoy.

We welcome those who have recently relocated to the area, people who are newly diagnosed, care partners, family, and friends to join us for a meetup and social hour at the PRO office in Beaverton. Typically, newly diagnosed includes people who have been diagnosed in the past three years or so.

This is an opportunity to meet people in person, make local connections to others navigating similar waters, get to know what PRO offers, collect resources, and meet the staff.

Light snacks and refreshments provided.

LIFT for Family Caregivers: West Linn

Does your loved one have trouble with mobility? Are you worried about how to help them out of bed or out of a car? Or, do you just want to be prepared for what may lie ahead?

During this hour and a half program, our guest physical therapist will lead you through the proper and safe techniques to transfer your loved one who has mobility issues due to Parkinson’s disease. This program is intended for family care partners only. There will be 5 interactive stations 1) Sit to stand 2) Transfer in and out of bed 3) Transfer in the bathroom 4) Transfers in and out of the car 5) Lastly, how to get up off the floor. Each caregiver will participate, rotating to each station and practicing with other caregivers. You will also learn when it is necessary to seek help.

If you have physical limitation, please let the instructors know before class.

August Hike w/PRO

Join PRO and volunteer Sukhee So Chinn, Physical Therapist, as she leads the PRO hike series! Sukhee has been leading hikes with PRO for over 10 years! She is happy to hike with you but also answer your questions about balance, exercise, and staying active with PD.

This is a great place to meet new people and socialize as you exercise! Hikes are generally 1.5 miles total on mostly flat terrain, you set the pace for yourself and abilities! Please bring water and feel free to bring trekking poles if you have those!

NeuroFitness for Parkinson’s

Class addresses common symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (rigidity, hand dexterity, balance, gait, posture and more). Participants stand and move about the room with chairs available for rest and balance assist as needed.

Pedal Support for Parkinson’s – Ride and Adaptive Cycling Fair

PeDal Support is an organized ride with unsupported two routes available. The long ride 21 miles through Washington County departs at 10 am. A shorter ride 7.6 miles winds through the Fanno Creek Trail and local neighborhoods departs at 10:30 am. Both routes are on open roads with possibly heavy traffic. Safety is our top concern. Please be comfortable riding near cars and in traffic. An experienced cyclist will lead each route. Shorter unsupported routes are available along the Fanno Creek Trail.

Registration is required and includes a catered lunch. ALL fitness levels are welcome!

Adaptive Cycle Fair: Don’t have a bike, yet are curious and want to learn more? This is for you! Join us from 11:00am-2:00pm to check out adaptive bikes and visit with vendors. No registration is required for the fair.
