Stay Sharp: A Conversation about Cognition and Parkinson’s

In recognition of June being Brain Awareness Month, PRO is presenting a valuable in-person talk about cognition and Parkinson’s. In this talk, Wes Smith, MA, CCC-SLP and Brent Waroniecki, OTD, OTR/L will address what to look for – what are normal age-related cognitive changes and what is an indicator to speak with your care team.

Both speech language pathologists and occupational therapists are experts in helping address cognitive changes. Wes and Brent will explain the approaches their respective disciplines use when working with clients who are experiencing cognitive changes, as well as share practical tips and strategies for managing these changes.

This in-person talk will be held on Monday, June 9, at 3:00 p.m. at PRO’s main office in Beaverton

Join PRO and local Allied health professionals to answer your questions around living healthy with Parkinson’s Disease.

With Parkinson’s disease, it is important to know what therapies are available to you and what each specific specialty offers. Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and PD specific exercise are all important to incorporate into your daily life.  Join us as four of Pendleton’s Allied health professionals talk about their specialties, offer important information and open the program up for Q and A.

Vancouver: Lift Program for Family Caregivers

Lift Program for Family Caregivers

During this hour and a half program, a physical therapist will lead you through the proper and safe techniques to transfer your loved one who has mobility issues due to Parkinson’s disease. This program is intended for family care partners only. 

There will be 5 interactive stations 1) Sit to stand 2) Transfer in and out of bed 3) Transfer in the bathroom 4) Transfers in and out of the car 5) Lastly, how to get up off the floor. Each caregiver will participate, rotating to each station and practicing with other caregivers. You will also learn when it is necessary to seek help.

Led by Emily Kaemmerlen, DPT

If you have physical limitation, please let the instructors know before class. If you register and then are unable to attend, please call our office as soon as possible so we are able to allow others to participate in your place 800-426-6806. We anticipate this being an ongoing workshop so there will be other opportunities.

Socialization and connection are so important for people living with a new diagnosis. Sometimes walking into a support group can be daunting the first time.

Here’s a low-key alternative if you would like to:

  • Find out about programs and services in Lane County.
  • Meet staff in-person and ask questions.
  • Drop in to meet others who are newly diagnosed.

Gadgets and Gizmos: Vancouver

Join Megan Shah, OTR/L for an interactive and engaging discussion about what OTs do, how they help their clients, and explore the many gizmos and gadgets they use to help people achieve their goals. You will discover that there is much more to working with an OT than just the activities of daily living!

Megan will also explain how to set specific, achievable, goals and what to expect when working with an Occupational Therapist. Attendees will have the opportunity to try some devices and have an open conversation with Megan about the tools that could work for them.

McMinnville Movement Class: PRO sponsored in-person

These classes are designed specifically for those with Parkinson’s Disease. The main focus is on mobility and safety, with movements that improve strength, balance, endurance, and flexibility. Classes are designed to accommodate varying degrees of ability and limitations. Movements include gentle stretching, both seated and standing exercises, and hand-eye coordination.

Class is light-hearted, friendly environment of camaraderie where all are welcome with open arms! We share moments in life that bring a smile and a laugh! Professional instruction is provided by long time local fitness trainer Bill Wilson, BA, CPT-CSCS(ret) who brings may years of expertise working with neurological challenges

Walking, Balance, and Parkinson’s: Beaverton

Martina Mancini, PhD and Carla da Silva Batista, PhD discuss how Parkinson’s affects walking and balance and ways to slow this progression.

Are you noticing changes in the way you walk or finding your balance isn’t quite what it used to be? As Parkinson’’s progresses, these types of changes in gait and balance are not uncommon.

Come to this informative in-person presentation by Dr. Martina Mancini and Dr. Carla da Silva Batista from the OHSU Balance Disorders Laboratory. They will discuss the changes one may experience, as well as covering what interventions you can incorporate into your daily routine to help address them.

Martina and Carla will also share information about the exciting research that is happening at the Gait and Balance Lab and how you can possibly be involved.
